Obama Sushi...and other thoughts for today
'Nuff said. Too good not to pass around! Thanks to Gawker for finding this. According to the maker, the "process of trial and error was very difficult". This says: "Obama's skin is made out of ami (little shrimp) boiled in soy sauce, his hair is made out of black sesame seeds, and his teeth are made from fish paste."
mm 'bama is full of protein!
In other culinary news...
Since the collapse of Lehman Brothers, apparently applications to the French Culinary Institute have doubled from 500 to 1,000 a WEEK...not a surprise, but will this lead to more toques behind hotdog carts? (too many with culinary degrees + not enough restaurant jobs = take a high(er) paying pushcart job!) in case you're curious, it's $11 - $13 an hour. Makes my babysitting jobs for $7/hr back in 1993 look saaaad...
Pastry gets the shaft again...FCI is planning to take $4,000 off the price of pastry-arts seminars, starting in March - and it's STILL $32,750! Hot dam!

Banh Mi n Bacon
yes it's pork. I love it. Makes. day. happy.
that's it.
Related note: love today's NY Times little ditty on bacon and desserts: "bacon desserts have become the skinny jeans of pastry: trendy to a fault, saucy when successful, yet often ill-advised."
Maybe they should tell that to a skinny-jeans wearing East Villager eating a cupcake. :-P
